Desktop Manager

Desktop Manager is a free virtual desktop manager that places an unobtrusive desktop pager in the menubar and allows fast switching of desktops either with hotkeys or by clicking in the pager. It is designed to be fast, lightweight, and Just Works. It is released under the GNU General Public License.

DesktopManager was originally written by Rich Wareham for Tiger PPC platforms, but his work on this project was stopped in 2005, arriving to the 0.5.3 version. The source code of original 0.5.3 version can be found on http://desktopmanager.berlios.de.

Personally I have found his work excellent, but rather incomplete lacking some basic features such as windows moving and dragging over the virtual desktops, windows sticking and so on. And, obviously, it had to be ported to the modern Intel MacOSX 10.5.X platforms. So, 10.05.2009 I started to work on it in order to improve this code and adopt for my own needs.

WHAT’S NEW IN THIS VERSION?

Well, although there is a lot of work should be done yet, something has begun to come out. I have versioned this release as 0.5.5 jumping over my internal 0.5.4 version I’m currently using for the test purposes.

  • Porting to MacOSX 10.5.6 using XCode (version 3.1.2) and its framework libraries. A lot of obsolete and deprecated function calls was changed. Although this version still contain some of these deprecated calls, it can be considered as a quite stable version.
  • A new transition effect was added: Flipping, very cool 3D effect.
  • Moving windows over the virtual desktops is implemented. This could be done from the main menu or from the keyboard shortcuts.
  • Dragging windows over the virtual desktops using active screen edges is implemented. It needs some rework in order to remove some flickering, but it works good.

Now, what the basic key features of DesktopManager? The following cames from Rich Wareham’s site:

  • Have any number of named virtual ‘screens’ (up to available memory) to arrange your programs on. Have one screen to keep your mail programs, one for web-browsing, one for work. The possibilities are almost endless.
  • Exciting switch transitions to make all your Windows/Linux using friends green with envy.
  • Control switching via fully configurable ‘hotkeys’.
  • Get an instant overview of your desktops via a status-bar based ‘pager’.
  • Move windows around in desktops via a desktop-based ‘pager’.
  • Desktop pager compatible with CodeTek VirtualDesktop skins.
  • Move windows between desktops easily via status-bar menu or Expose’-like ‘Operations Menu’.
  • Sticky window support – have one window on all desktops.
  • Active edge support – switch desktop when the mouse moves past the edge of the screen.
  • Desktop notification bezel – pops up on desktop switch to help you orient yourself.
  • Current desktop name available on desktop background to help you keep track.
  • Small, unobtrusive app – can be made to be totally invisible if you want. Designed to get out of your way and act like a part of the OS.
